TUESDAYS AT NORTH BEACH (North Beach Library) began at the Readers Bookstore in Fort Mason eight years ago at the end of Jack Hirschman’s term as  4th Poet Laureate of San Francisco, when he became the Poet-in-Residence for the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library, which group operates the Bookstore.

Members of the RPB, as well as non-members and, at times, visiting poets from other cities or towns, have been invited to read. The events are weekly, on Tuesdays  at 6:30 pm. From 2013 when funds for the San Francisco International Poetry Festival –— which Hirschman also organized — began to dry up or for one or another reasons be withheld, he has asked poets who also are translators, to read works bi-lingually and this is a MOST important part of the schedule of the Thursday event.

He works with Byron Spooner, Director of Book Operations for the Friends; Judith Ayn Bernhard, of the Friends and the RPB, and branch library staff. They all hope that multi-linguality continues as a priority in the years ahead.
