Revolutionary Poets Brigade - Los Angeles shared Michael Brown's event.

Book discussion: "Freedom Is a Constant Struggle" by Angela Davis

Book discussion: "Freedom Is a Constant Struggle" by Angela Davis

Facilitated and organized by the Long Beach Politics Reading Group, a collective of Long Beach-based activists, workers, students, who are all interested in the idea of praxis ie merging the theoretical with the streets.

Disclaimer: Angela Davis will NOT BE appearing at this book discussion. Our group meets to discuss various books/ pamphlets each month. Apologies for any mix ups.

About the book: In these newly collected essays, interviews, and speeches, world-renowned activist and scholar Angela Y. Davis illuminates the connections between struggles against state violence and oppression throughout history and around the world.

Reflecting on the importance of Black feminism, intersectionality, and prison abolitionism for today’s struggles, Davis discusses the legacies of previous liberation struggles—from the Black freedom movement to the South African antiapartheid movement. She highlights connections and analyzes today’s struggles against state terror, from Ferguson to Palestine.

Facing a world of outrageous injustice, Davis challenges us to imagine and build the movement for human liberation. And in doing so, she reminds us that “freedom is a constant struggle.”

Birds of a Feather
by Mark Lipman

Birds of a feather,
they flock close together,
just like Clinton and Trump

I say, birds of a feather,
they flock close together,
just like Clinton and Trump

I mean, birds of a feather,
they flock close together
just like Clinton and Trump

It doesn’t really matter,
in front of the cameras,
what you say on the stump

In the back rooms
is where the deals are made
where all the dirty money gets dumped

So when you act all bewildered
and pretend not to know
and play us for a bunch of chumps

I just look at the company you keep
who are your buddies and chums

Cos birds of a feather,
they flock close together,
just like Clinton and Trump

I mean, birds of a feather,
they flock close together,
just like Clinton and Trump

I say, birds of a feather,
they flock close together
just like Clinton and Trump

Who are you trying to fool,
saying it doesn’t matter
where your money comes from?

Promises made
to the signing of checks
is the very root of our political corruption

Closed room deals
are so Dick Cheney.

So yes, I think I do have a right to know
in the name of Democracy
what you say to a room full of Wall Street cronies

Cos birds of a feather,
they flock close together,
just like Clinton and Trump

I say, birds of a feather,
they flock close together,
just like Clinton and Trump

I mean, birds of a feather,
they flock close together
just like Clinton and Trump

Kissinger, Bush and The Donald
the .01 percent Walton Family
the Monsantos of this world
this who you party with and mingle?

Netanyahu and Ben Bernanke
your inner circle?

Then you wonder why people don’t trust you?

All I can say is
Feel the Bern

Cos birds of a feather,
they flock close together,
just like Clinton and Trump

I mean, birds of a feather,
they flock close together,
just like Clinton and Trump

I say, birds of a feather,
they flock close together
just like Clinton and Trump

Socialist snow on the streets

Socialist talk in the Maverick bookstore

Socialist kids sucking socialist lollipops

Socialist poetry in socialist mouths

—aren't the birds frozen socialists?

Aren't the snowclouds blocking the airfield

Social Democratic Appeasement?

Isn't the socialist sky owned by

the socialist sun?

Earth itself socialist, forests, rivers, lakes

furry mountains, socialist salt

in oceans?

Isn't this poem socialist? It doesn't

belong to me anymore.
